The Trials of Brother Jero

Synopsis

The story behind The Trials of Brother Jero.

This volume contains two short plays about Brother Jeroboam, the rather less than holy West African ‘bench divine’ created by Nigerian playwright Wole Soyinka.

In the original comedy The Trials of Brother Jero, first published in 1964, the charlatan preacher, burdened by a cross ‘daughter of Eve’, uses Christian superstition for his own salvation.

In the sequel, Jero’s Metamorphosis, the profit-minded ‘prophet’ thwarts a government attempt to cleanse the beach of all the dubious brethren who ply their trade there.
